DEATH TAKES AUG. MANTHE
Well Known Farmer of Eden Neighborhood –Funeral Sunday at Huron.
Ten hours after the death of his life long friend, Charles Fuhrman, August Manthe, well known farmer of the Eden neighborhood, passed away. Death came to Mr. Manthe at 2:10 a.m. this morning at his home following a long illness during the last six weeks of which he had been bedfast.
August Manthe was born May 23, 1857, in Woltersdorf, Germany. He came to Atchison county in 1884 and had lived here since that time. He was married in Germany to Christine Hoeppner, and to this union twelve children were born.
Mr. Manthe was a prosperous farmer in his neighborhood and was loved by all who knew him for his cheerfulness, honesty and integrity. He was a member of the Baptist church of Huron and was a thoroughly Christian man.
Surviving are his widow, and nine children: Albert and William Manthe of near Eden; Mrs. Lena Miles and Mrs. Rose Scholz of Huron; Mrs. Minna Schwarzer of Lancaster; August Manthe Jr., of Easton, Kas; Mrs. Christine McCullough and Robert Manthe of Highland and Mrs. Mary Schwarzer of Jarbalo, Kas. Three children preceded Mr. Manthe in death. There are 37 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Also one brother, Fred Manthe of Fostoria, Kas.
The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Baptist church in Huron. Burial will be in the Lancaster cemetery. Pallbearers will be composed of Mr. Manthe's sons-in-law: Charles Miles, Robert Scholz, Elmer McCullough, Will Whaley, Paul Schwarzer and Herbert Schwarzer. Sawin & Douglass will have charge of the funeral.
