BLACKFOOT - Sylvia Ferl Smith Baker, 92, of Blackfoot, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005 at the Bingham Extended Care Facility.

She was born Feb. 4, 1913 in Burley, to Victor Josephus and Maggie Irene Metcalf Smith. She lived in View, Thatcher and Malta and has lived in Blackfoot since 1962.

Sylvia attended elementary school in View and Burley and graduated from Burley High School. She studied nursing in Idaho Falls for a short time before marrying Trent Coombs Baker on June 18, 1932, in Brigham City, Utah. Their union was later solemnized in the Logan LDS temple on March 8, 1934. He preceded her in death on Feb. 25, 1982.

She was a member of the LDS church and had served in various callings in scouting. One of her ward callings was making the dough for the Tiger Ears at the fair. She also served as a young women's leader, Relief Society president, primary worker, taught genealogy and attended the temple often. She enjoyed being a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, she served in several offices including Captain and Historian. She spent many hours working on the museum when it was being remodeled. Throughout her life she helped provide for her family by working as a cook in the Malta-Raft River School District. She also cleaned the Blackfoot LDS seminary building and other local area businesses.

She always grew a beautiful garden and many neighbors and family members enjoyed sharing it's bounty. She always had time to tend grandchildren and great grandkids. Service was a major part of her life, she was always there to help sick neighbors, ironing, mending and cooking for anyone in need.

She is survived by her children, Zenith Ray (Phyllis) Baker, Justin Titus (Irene) Baker both of Moreland, Joyce Irene Morgan of Caldwell, Fredrick Wayne Baker of Blackfoot, and Deborah Ann (William) Pixton of Georgia; two sisters, Fay (Floyd) Larsen of Burley, and Nelda (Robert) Lowder of Rupert, 20 grandchildren and 57 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Trent, a daughter, Janet, her parents, and four sisters, Marie Warren, Iona Gould, Josephine Anderson and Rae Smith.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, 2005, at the Hawker Funeral Home. The family will meet with friends and relatives from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, 2005, and again for one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Pleasant View Cemetery in Burley at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
