Kjerstie Gulbrandsdatter Melbostad was born in Winneshiek County, Iowa 21 Feb 1854 to Gilbert Melbostad and his wife Anne Larsdatter Dahl. Gilbert (Gulbrand Juelsen)Melbostad was born 29 Jul 1824 and died 23 Apr 1898. Her mother, Anne Larsdatter Dahl was born 20 Sep 1826 and died 9 Mar 1892.

Kjerstie was their second born of eight children.
