Roy Abrahamson, 77, rural Plaza, N.D., died Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011, in a Minot hospital. His funeral service is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Shell Creek Lutheran Church, rural Plaza. Burial will be at Shell Creek Cemetery. Visitation is today, Nov. 1, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Springan Funeral Home, Stanley.

Roy was born June 17, 1934, in Berthold, N.D. He was the third child of Bert and Wilma (Vesey) Abrahamson. He grew up on the family farm south of Tagus, where the family farmed and raised cattle. He graduated from Tagus High School in 1952. Roy then took over the Elida Oswald farm northwest of Plaza. In 1954 he enlisted in the U.S. Army National Guard and did his basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. In 1957 Roy started doing road construction for Leman Stewart.

At a dance near Plaza, Roy met the love of his life, Mary Jacobson, who was a school teacher from South Prairie, and they were married on Aug. 30, 1959, at Shell Creek Lutheran Church.

In 1961 he became active duty military and was stationed at Fort Riley, Kan. After that he started custom combining in the southern states, going as far as Oklahoma. They lived in Plaza for 2 years and Mary was teaching there and he was combining. He also worked for Parshall Propane. They moved to Parshall and lived there 3 years, where Mary taught school and he worked for Westland Oil Propane Plant. He still continued to combine every year for 12 years. Roy and Mary made their home on their farm south of Blaisdell, where they raised their four children, Kirk, Stacy, Harley and Kristi. They farmed and ranched for many years there.

He started driving school bus for Stanley Public Schools in 1978 and continued that for 10 years. He and their 3 sons started Abrahamson Trucking in 1985 and hauled grain, cattle, anhydrous and machinery. He continued to drive truck until 2009, when he retired to care for Mary, who passed away Aug. 10, 2010.

Roy enjoyed many things. He loved to dance, listen to the radio, and watch television, especially RFDTV. He was always up for a visit and to have coffee with friends and family. He was a dedicated member of Shell Creek Lutheran Church, and always attended the annual dinner. Roy enjoyed helping Kickapoo Country every year when they made lefse for the dinner and lumpa for the N.D. State Fair and Norsk Hostfest. He loved to run his Caterpillar dozer and scraper, do road construction, and drive his truck on his many travels, where he met many new friends.

He was on the McAlmond Township Board for 12 years, the REC board for 12 years and was a current member of Shell Creek Lutheran Church, rural Blaisdell. He was a member of the Minot Moose Lodge, where he and Mary loved to go dancing.

We are grateful to God that He blessed us with Roy for so many years. He will be greatly missed by all. We are thankful for all of his friends and neighbors who helped him in any way. He loved you all!

His loving family includes: his sons, Kirk (Beth), Stacy (Patti), and Harley (Melanie) Abrahamson all of Minot; his daughter Kristi (Allen) Redding of Donnybrook; grandchildren: Katie Abrahamson, Joshua, Jordan, Justin and Hallie Abrahamson, Austin, Logan and Dawson Redding; great-grandson, Hunter Abrahamson; sister, Betty (Vaughn) Bloom of Stanley; brothers, Bob (Dianne) Abrahamson of Bottineau and Norris (Ruth) Abrahamson of Minot; sister-in-law, Clarice Abrahamson of Minot; uncle, Ranold (Phyllis) Vesey of Stanley; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive as well as his faithful companion, Patches.
