The son of Heinrich & Juliana (Huston) Pensyl, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Center Mills, Butler Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 5" tall and had dark hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 19, 1864, as a private with Co. K, 184th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 2, 1865.

He married Ann Margaret Rickel and fathered Lillie M. (b. 10/??/75), Lottie F. (b. 03/??/77 - married a Grove), Stella V. (b. 08/??/79 - married a Crawford), George W. (b. 02/??/89), Mary E. (b. 08/??/92 - married a Proctor), and Margurite R.. By 1900, he was living in Altoona, Blair County, where he died from "acute gastritis."
