Although born in Denver, he had moved to Southern California with his parents as a child.
Jim was working for the Forest Service out of Reno when the helicopter being used on the film 'The Misfits' by John Houston wasn't able to fly at altitude in thin air with weight. Houston asked the USFS to loan Jim and his helicopter to the film, they agreed.
For over 30 years, he went on to appear in such motion pictures as "The Satan Bug" (1965), "The Andromeda Strain" (1971), "Dirty Harry" (1971), "Dirty Mary Crazy Larry" (1974), "Airport 1975" (1974), "Earthquake" (1974), "Mr. Billion" (1977), "The Domino Principle" (1977), "Heroes" (1977), "Who'll Stop the Rain" (1978), "When Time Ran Out..." (1980), "The Nude Bomb" (1980), "Raise the Titanic" (1980), "Night Crossing" (1983), "Blue Thunder" (1984), "Get Crazy" (1983), "The Dead Pool" (1988), "The Last of the Finest" (1990), "True Identity" (1991), "Radio Flyer" (1992), "A Perfect World" (1993), "Assassins" (1995), "Conspiracy Theory" (1997), "Lethal Weapon 4" (1998), "Blue Streak" (1999), and "Blood Work" (2002). On television, he became a familiar face appearing various guest spots on such syndicated sitcoms as "The Name of the Game," "Ironside," "Dan August," "Mission: Impossible," "The Doris Day Show," "Banaceck," "Marcus Welby, M.D.," "McCloud," "Adam-12," "Mannix" "Dr. Kildare," "Chopper One," "The F.B.I.," "Petrocelli," "S.W.A.T.," "Cannon," "Police Story," "Most Wanted," "CHiPs," "Quincy M.E.," "The Rockford Files," and "Highway to Heaven." During his career, he was supportive of the Motion Picture and Television Fund, a member of the Screen Actors Guild, was active with California State Republican Committee, and was a founder, and president, of the Motion Picture Pilots Association.
Jim was married to Karen (K.C.) from 1967 until his death, or 38 years. Karen's passion was horses, Jim and Karen showed Arabian Trail horses.
