After a long and courageous battle with cancer, LCDR Reid is with our Lord and Jesus Christ in Heaven.
Born on August 4th 1945 in Atlanta, GA; the only son of CDR Albert and Margaret Reid. He was preceded in death by his mother and his son, Ashley Ryan Reid.
Dennis served twenty years in the US Navy as a Naval Flight Officer. His career was highlighted by a variety of assignments, including: Aviation Officer Candidate School, Naval Aviation Schools Command, NAS Pensacola, FL; Patrol Squadron Eleven, NAS Brunswick, ME, Naval Air Training Unit, Mather Air Force Base, Sacramento, CA; two tours on board USS Saratoga (CV-60); USS Forrestal (CV-59), Mayport, FL; and two tours at Naval Aviation Schools Command, NAS Pensacola, FL.
While serving the Navy, he was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, Air Force Outstanding Unit Ribbon, Navy "E" Ribbon, Navy Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Metal with bronze star, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with four bronze stars and Expert Pistol Shot Medal. He retired in Pensacola, FL on June 30, 1992.
LCDR Reid is survived by his wife of forty two years, Sandra Reid. He is also survived by his three sons; Sonny Reid (Pensacola, FL), Sean Reid (Pace, FL) and Ryan Reid (Columbus, GA) and their wives Angel, Jenene, and Crystal. Dennis is survived by five wonderful grandchildren, and several very supportive cousins.
Dennis graduated from the University of Georgia with a Music Education Degree and was a die hard "Bulldog" that bled red and black.
Music was always the center of his world. After retiring from the Navy, he went back to teaching school and being a band director for several high schools and middle schools in FL, GA and AL. He retired from the Georgia Teaching System in 2005 with 18 years of service. Also, throughout his whole career, he continued to serve his Lord by being a music director for over 30 years for churches in Columbus, GA and Pensacola, FL.
His family would like to thank Emerald Coast Hospice, Sweetwater Medical Supply and Cokesbury United Methodist Church for their loving care and support throughout his illness. We will always be grateful.
The family will receive family and friends 1:00 p.m., Sunday, 10/30, at Bayview Fisher Pou Chapel.
The funeral will be at Cokesbury United Methodist Church, 5725 N. Ninth Avenue, Pensacola, FL, Monday, October 31, 2011, 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery, NAS Pensacola, FL, at 1:15 p.m.
Pallbearers will be; Tim McRae (brother-in-law, Columbus, GA), John McRae (brother-in-law, Columbus, GA), Dayton Preston (brother-in-law, Columbus, GA), Brooks McRae (cousin, Elijay, GA), Bob Ryan (friend, Clearwater, FL) and Jackie Hancock (friend, Columbus, GA). Honorary Pallbearers will be his friends and members of the Valley Motorcycle Touring Club, Columbus, GA.
Bayview Fisher-Pou Chapel, 3351 Scenic Highway, Pensacola, FL 32503 is in charge of arrangements. (Flowers are most welcomed and donations to Emerald Coast Hospice, 4212 Highway 90, Pace, FL 32571).
