Joseph Willinger Wilson was born to Mary Madeline Lang and her first husband Andrew Wilson, a Civil War soldier from Orange County, Indiana, posted in her hometown of Jeffersonville, Clark County, Indiana. Andrew Wilson deserted Mary Lang, either just before or just after the birth of Joseph, and returned to his home after the war to marry his local sweetheart. The brokenhearted Mary quickly married a local farmer named John Francis Myers, a native of Bavaria. John Myers had been widowed during the war years, and had two children of his own, John and Mary. John Myers "adopted" (nothing formal) Joseph Wilson - who was named after an elderly Jeffersonville neighbor who was his baptismal sponsor. John Myers and Mary Lang had children named Rose, Lizzie, Ed, Andy, Carrie, Emma, and Katie. In 1870, the Myers family moved to Doniphan County, Kansas, where Joseph Wilson grew-up. He married Eliza Iden in Saint Joseph, Missouri, on 11 November 1900, and moved to Oklahoma soon afterward. Their children were Wayne Joseph Wilson (1902-1976) and adopted daughter Edith Beatrice Wilson Skinner (1913-1989).
