Bennion, UT-- George Wheeler Labrum died peacefully in his home on February 13, 2000, of causes incident to age.

He was born on October 19, 1921 in Bennion, Utah, to Thomas Orren and Evelyn May Pearse Labrum. His mother died when he was three years old, and his father later married Pearl N. Player.

He attended Plymouth Elementary and Junior High, and Granite High Schools. He trained to become an automobile mechanic, and had received a mission call to the Western States Mission in 1942. Just before he was to leave on his mission, he received a draft call to the U. S. Army, and was stationed Aberdeen, Maryland. He was given an honorable discharge due to ill health.

He married his sweetheart and eternal companion, Betty Jeanne Nagle in the Salt Lake Temple on April 23, 1943. They were the parents of nine children. She died August 20, 1990.

George was a master diamond setter, manufacturing, and custom jeweler. He was one of the original employees of the O. C. Tanner Jewelry Company. He was a branch manager of LG Balfour Company for many years. He had been a designer for Gull Corporation and made the prototype for the original CTR ring, and assisted with several designs for the Primary organization as well as items used in some LDS temples. He was also self employed.

He was a member of the LDS Church, and had served as a Ward Clark, in Elders Quorum and YMMIA presidencies, Seventies and High Priests Group leaders, home teacher, and as a Stake missionary in the Taylorsville, Utah Stake. He was also Branch president of the Bennion Care Center. He had been an ordinance worker in the Jordan River Temple.

He belonged to the Taylorsville Camp of Sons of Utah Pioneers, and enjoyed his association with many life long friends there.

He enjoyed repairing and restoring cars, singing, gardening, laughing with family, and telling jokes. He lent a helping hand willingly to all who knew him. He will be deeply missed by those who associated with him.

He is survived by eight of his children: Suzanne (Terril) Larsen, Laurel (James) Gaskill, Nadine (Tad) Goaslind, Alene Andersen, Thomas (Kathy) Labrum, Mel (Lynne) Labrum, David (Athena) Labrum, and Evelyn (Reed) Thomson; 41 grandchildren, and three step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, and the following sisters and brother: Marie (Bruce) Breinholt, Velda (Wayne) Pearson, Janet Breinholt, and O. Kent (Carol) Labrum.

He was preceded in death by his wife, and one daughter, Joslyn (Joel) Dimick; and the following brothers and sisters: O. Pearse Labrum, Eileen L. Poulsen, T. John Labrum, Evelyn L. Hoskins, Avon L. Blanck, Mavis L. Williams, Melvin Labrum, and Gerald N. Labrum.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 17, 2000 in the Bennion 2nd Ward Chapel, 6100 South Kamas Drive. Family and friends may call on Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 South Highland Drive and on Thursday from 9:45-10:45 a.m. at the ward prior to services. Interment in the Redwood Memorial Estates Cemetery. Funeral directors: Wasatch Lawn Mortuary.
