Albert Freyholtz was deaf and did not have an oral language. It was told that Albert had developed his own set of signs and gestures to be able to communicate with his family. We can only speculate that he may have, a very young age, contracted a disease such as mumps, measles, or whooping cough, that left him without his ability to hear.
