US Congressman. Born near Barnwell Court House, South Carolina, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1798 and commenced to practice in Barnwell District, South Carolina. He was a member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives, (1808-13). In 1819, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Congresses, serving until his death at age 49. He died in a carriage accident at China Grove, North Carolina, while en route to his home from Washington, D.C.
