Nancy Starr Cantonwine Chipman was the fourth of nine children of James & Elizabeth Starr: Phoebe M., Sarah Ann, William, Nancy, Benjamin, Mary E., Rachel R., Emma D., & Hiram. On April 22, 1855, Nancy married John Cantonwine several years after the death of his first wife, Caroline (Denslow) Cantonwine. John was the son of Charles & Mary Magdalena (Scholl) Cantonwine.

Before Caroline's death, she and John had two children: Ellen A. (m. James Doak Nash), and Malona. Little is known about Malona beyond her appearance in the 1860 census for Waterloo, Black Hawk county, IA, age 8. She is not listed in the subsequent 1870 census so either she died between 1860-1870 or she had left home by 1870, when she would have been approximately 18.

John and Nancy then had six more children:
Arius W. (aka A. W. or Charles)
Eugene (died at nine months)
James Wilbur (aka W. J.) (m. Ada (Eubank) Peck)
Edson A. (died at a year and a half)
Effie Adella (m. Robert Helvey)
John Franklin.

John fought in the Civil War with Company A of the 24th Iowa Infantry (Union). He enlisted August 8, 1862 and mustered out April 20, 1865. He died Sept. 19, 1868.

Four years after John's death, Nancy married Edmond Chipman on April 14, 1872. They had one daughter, Lettie (m. Louis Boche).

Nancy's death date and burial location are unknown. She is last noted in the 1900 census living with her two unmarried sons, Charles and James, in Routt county, Colorado. In the 1910 census, James and Charles, still single, are working as ranch hands in Jackson county, Colorado, and Nancy is no longer living with them. Based on these two census records, one can speculate that she may have died between 1900 and 1910.
