On Sunday, Oct. 23, 2011, longtime Cochise resident, Helen L. DeFries, passed away in Tucson, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter DeFries, in 1958, her son, Cordell (in infancy), and her daughter, Elizabeth Ferguson, grandson, Kevin Ferguson, and a granddaughter, Cathleen Bolling. Mrs. DeFries is survived by her daughter, Mary Susan Bolling (John Scott) of Santa Teresa, N.M., grandson, Robert Ferguson (Terri), Indianapolis, Ind., grandchildren, Lauren and Brydon, and granddaughter, Jennifer (Steven), Andover, Mass., and grandson, Daniel.
She was born in Seymour, Ind. on Sept.25, 1915, the oldest of six children, with five younger brothers. All have preceded her in death except her youngest brother, Richard Wells, who resides in Bloomington, Ind.
Mrs. DeFries moved to Cochise with her husband, Walter, in 1950, where they "retired" on a chicken ranch. After Walter passed away, she attended Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Ariz., where she completed her bachelor's degree in Education, and taught elementary school in Cochise and Willcox for several years.
Visitation is on Thursday, Oct. 27, 2011, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., followed by funeral services at 6 p.m. at the Bring's Broadway Chapel, 6910 E. Broadway, Tucson, Ariz. Graveside services are at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, at the Cochise Cemetery on North Highway 191, Cochise County Arizona.
Donations to Tucson Medical Center Hospice or the Human Society are suggested by the family. Flowers are also welcome.
