Resident of Carroll County Over 56 Years Died Saturday Morning
John Franklin Cox was born June 7, 1863 at Jacksonville, Morgan County, Illinois, 7th child of Nathaniel Franklin Cox & Hester Cox and died at his home south of Glidden, Iowa, February 10th, 1934. He moved from Illinois when a small boy and lived in Kansas and also Missouri, then in Jasper County, Iowa, but spent most of his life in Carroll County, being a pioneer of the state of Iowa, having lived here over 50 years.
He was married to Margaret Sprague, September 5, 1884. Two children were born to their union, Bessie & Hester. Bessie preceded her father 29 years ago. His widow & 1 daughter, Hester Sexton and 1 step-son Neal Larkins, 4 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 3 sisters & 2 brothers are left to mourn his death. He was a member of the Pleasant Ridge Friends Church. He was a good and honorable citizen and has a large host of friends who mourn his death.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Pleasant Ridge Friends Church where a large congregation of friends and neighbors had come to pay their last tributes of respect. The services were conducted by Rev. Wendell Hansen, pastor of the Pleasant Ridge church, assisted by Rev. Grover Simcox of Glidden. Interment was in Westlawn Cemetery.
Relatives from a distance present were: D. L. Cox of Newburg, Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Warren, Mrs. D. M. Backer, Mrs. John Gurish and Mr. & Mrs. Clyde Sprague and son Cleo of Des Moines, Mr. & Mrs. John Spurgeon, Mr. & Mrs. Walter Spurgeon, Henry Dreezen, Gust Dreezen, Elmer Dreezen and Clarence Dreezen all of Lake City, Mrs. Arthur McClurg of Scranton and Mr. & Mrs. Otto of Carroll.
