U.S. Senator. He graduated from William and Mary College in 1807 and became successful in agricultural pursuits. During the War of 1812, he served as a Colonel of the Virginia Volunteers and subsequently became Brigadier General of the Virginia Militia. In 1816, he was elected as a Democratic Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William B. Giles, serving until 1817. In a bitter campaign for his election bid to the Fifteenth Congress, he was killed in a duel with his brother-in-law, John Mason McCarty.
