Willie James "Bill" Whitney Sr., 98, died at home Monday, Oct. 24, 2011. Born in Houma in 1913, he was a 60-year resident of Central. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 19th Combat Engineers Battalion. A master builder, he was a member of Carpenters Union Local 1098. He is survived by eight children, Marlene Whitney Rugg, Alicia Whitney Brumfield, Jeanne Whitney Christensen, Willie J. "Bill" Whitney Jr., Newell K. Whitney, Cina Whitney Guy, Richard A. Whitney and Delia Whitney Rotolo; and three siblings, Pearl Whitney Gros, of Labadieville, and Mae Whitney Soudlier and Daniel G. Whitney, both of Houma. He was blessed with 35 grandchildren and 73 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marguerite "Greet" Kolb Whitney; three siblings, Sewele J. Whitney, Rita Whitney Malbrough and Robert A. Whitney; two grandsons and a great-granddaughter. Visiting at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 4901 Harding St., Baker, on Friday, Oct. 28, from 9 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. Interment with military honors to follow in Roselawn Memorial Park, Baton Rouge.
