According to Gasconade County History, Volume I: He came with his parents from Virginia when he was a small boy, to the backwoods of Gasconade Coutny. He spent about 3 years in St. Louis as a clerk. In 1858 he was elected commissioner of Common School for Gasconade County.

In 1860 he returned to Virgina and married Virginia Conduit. He joined the Confederate Army 9th VA Cavalry (Co. B, the "Caroline Light Dragoons") when Virginia seceded from the Union. After the war was over, he moved his family back to Missouri and settled in Crawford County.

Purchased land first 40 acres in Crawford County 6/15/1866 and purchased another 40 acres 10/15/1873. Location 040n-004W SW1/4SW1/4 and NW1/4SW1/4
