Mrs. Carter was born in Lee County, July 24, 1909, daughter of the late Wayne Austin and Clyde DuBose King. The family moved to Darlington County shortly after her birth. She received her education in the Lamar schools and Winthrop College.
Mrs. Carter was an active member of Lamar United Methodist Church and served as President of the Burnie-Sue Sunday School Class for 15 years. She was a member of the Coker-Pate Circle and the Sue Stewart Circle of the United Methodist Women. She was a charter member of the Iris Garden Club and also belonged to the Lamar Book and Canasta Club, and the Lamar Sew and Chat Club.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Joan and John McKissick of Summerville and Linda and Marvin Slaughter of Florence; daughter-in-law, Sylvia L. Carter; seven grandchildren, Debbie and Rick Call of Summerville, Cindy and Donny McElveen of Winston-Salem, NC, Mark and Twanda Carter, Carla and Dan Mann ,Scott Carter, Marvin E. (Sonny) and Marla Slaughter, all of Florence, Andrew (Andy) and Christy Slaughter of Columbia; great-grandchildren, Richard and Aly Call of Anderson, Joe and Elizabeth Call of Charleston, Kyle McElveen of Winston- Salem, NC, Megan Carter, Matthew Carter, both of Columbia, Mark Carter, Jr., Mara Carter, Kirsten Mann and Trent Mann, all of Florence, Drew Slaughter, Mary Hagen Slaughter, both of Columbia. She is also survived by one niece and four nephews and several great-nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Carter was preceded in death by her son, Walter Earl (Bud) Carter, Jr., four brothers and their wives, James A. and Ruth King of Columbia, Marvin W. and Frances King of Lamar, Bizzan D. and Helen King of Florence and Wayne A. and Anne King of Surfside Beach.
