MARTIN, John Gartshore
John was born in Kitchener, Ontario on April 14, 1921, to John Alexander and
Jessie (Gartshore) Martin. He had two brothers, Wilson Alexander and William
Jamieson. William would be killed in the war. John attended school at the
Kitchener Collegiate Institute and University of Toronto and received a law degree.
As many young men did at the time, in 1940, he joined the World War II effort
with the Highland Light Infantry of Canada. Two years of tactical and weapons
training along with extensive leadership drills prepared John for the upcoming
involvement as a lieutenant of the 1st Battalion of the Lincoln and Welland
Regiment, the continuous deadly battles in Normandy, the Netherlands and
Germany. John's leadership and experience in battle brought forth many mentions
in dispatches and promotions. At the end of the war, John was discharged with the
rank of Major and was awarded with Canada's second highest award, the
Distinguished Service Order. John married MaryAnn (Kabel) and they raised three
children, Cathryn Jean, Jamieson (Jamie) and David. John passed away on
February 20, 2007, and is buried in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Kitchener.
