Samuel was born in Williamsburg, Kings Co. NY, and was the eldest son of Adelia McMAHON Brown and Edward Epworth Brown.
The family moved to Jersey City in 1868.
On 6 February 1875, Samuel married Mary Abby WATERHOUSE, daughter of Julia A. REYNOLDS Waterhouse and Nelson A. Waterhouse. Samuel and Mary Abby were married at St. Paul's Methodist-Episcopal Church in Jersey City by the Rev. Daniel R. Lowrie.
Early in their marriage, the couple lived with Samuel's parents, and Samuel worked as a packer and then as a tinsmith.
Daughter Bertha May was born 21 April 1876. Son Harry Edward was born 28 December 1877.
Samuel was living and working in Rahway, Union Co. NJ, as a wire worker when he died on 20 August 1881 at age 25 years, 6 months, and 14 days. Less than a year later, on 9 June 1882, daughter Bertha died at the home of her Waterhouse grandparents. She is also buried in Jersey City Cemetery.
On 14 February 1883, Mary Abby married Samuel Doughty, and Mary Abby, husband Samuel, and son Harry moved to New York City. Mary and Samuel had two children: Samuel Waterhouse Doughty and Florence Elizabeth Doughty. Mary Abby's second husband died 4 November 1891. About 1906, Mary Abby and her children moved to Bristol Co. MA, where Mary Abby died in 1942.
Mary Abby and Samuel Brown's son, Harry Edward Brown, is buried in the Brown Plot in Arlington Cemetery, Kearny, Hudson Co. NJ.
