Adelia McMAHON Brown was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Julia SMITH McMahon (born in Ireland) and John McMahon (born in Scotland).
It is a mystery to me how she got to Williamsburg (Brooklyn), New York, where she met Edward Epworth Brown, the son of Ann DOOLEY Brown and Samuel E. Brown. Adelia and Edward were married in March 1855 and moved to Jersey City about 1868.
In the 1900 and 1910 censuses, Adelia says she had nine children, six of whom are living. Three children, who were born and died between 1860 and 1870, are unknown. The six known children are Samuel E. Brown, John Epworth Brown, Adelia E. BROWN Lynn, Abel Pearson Brown, Eva E. Brown, and William H. Brown.
Adelia kept house during her marriage but dabbled in "varieties" in Jersey City from about 1887 to 1889. She cared for her son John's child, Sandford E. Brown, after John's wife Anna Louisa died. Later, her daughter Adelia's son, Edward Epworth Lynn, came to live with his grandparents after his parents died.
Adelia is buried in the plot that her son John Epworth Brown and his second wife, Josephine M. SOUTHARD Brindley, purchased in 1887.
