Roberts served as the assistant chief for the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma until he became chief in April 1978, after the untimely death of C. David Gardner. Judge Ralph Hodges administered the oath of office to Roberts in Montgomery Auditorium on the campus of Southeastern Oklahoma State University. During his time as chief and state representative, Hollis traveled extensively and was privileged to personally meet and serve with world leaders and dignitaries, including former President Bill Clinton. His family fondly remembers many of these trips and enjoyed sharing his experiences.
