Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a First Lieutenant in the Union Army in the 88th Indiana Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on March 19, 1865, at Bentonville, North Carolina. His citation reads "In the face of a galling fire from the enemy, he voluntarily returned to where the color bearer had fallen wounded and saved the flag of his regiment from capture."
