He was founder and co-owner of an insurance agency in Richlands, Onslow, North Carolina. Richlands Insurance Agency was originally organized in 1950 by Walter and his brother, Alwood Byron Ervin Sr. The original name was Ervin Brothers Insurance Agency; it was later changed to Richlands Insurance Agency when Mrs. Margaret B. Lockamy joined the firm. In June 1963, upon the death of A.B. Ervin Sr., his son Byron Jr. came aboard. Walter Carroll Erving Sr., 45, was killed in an automobile accident on July 15, 1961, in Comfort, North Carolina. He was working as an auto salesman at the time of his death.
