Eldest son of Timothy Symmes and Abigail Tuthill Symmes, he was born in New Jersey and went to Ohio, probably in the company of his uncle, John Cleves Symmes, in 1789. He bought a small lot in Cincinnati for $8 built a small shop, working as a silversmith for a year. In 1790 he went to nearby North Bend, oversaw the operations of his uncle's farm, and later helped his uncle survey the lands that became the Symmes Purchase. He received a section of land in Fairfield Township, Ohio, as a present for that work, and settled there in the late 1790s. The small settlement that grew up nearby took the name Symmes Corner. The house he built there in the late 1790s still stands on Nilles Rd. He married Phoebe FitzRandolph in 1794, and the couple had nine children. He also served seven years as judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Butler County. On the southern side of his farm, on a hill above Pleasant Run creek, he laid off two acres for a public burying ground, and he was buried there when he died in 1837.
