I am told he was a sort of the "black sheep" of the family. He ran away from home as a teenager. As a young man he worked as a teamster (driving a team of horses).
About 1900 the Osborns (Walter & Sarah) moved to California where their son, Frank, and Ruth Carney met and married. It was a somewhat unusual match because Frank was a Baptist and Ruth was a Catholic. In those days it was very unusual to marry outside one's religion - eventually, however, Frank converted to become a Catholic.
My grandfather (Frank) was a barber and I (Christopher) still remember my father (John W. Sr.) taking us (John's children) all to grandfather's barber shop for haircuts. Once a month we boys (me and my 5 brothers) would line up on the barber chairs for haircuts. Then we would go over to grandfather and grandmother's house for Sunday dinner.
Grandfather (Frank) was a "hard boiled" character with his own ideas and a "salty" vocabulary and a gruff exterior with a heart of gold. He could be very stubborn though. He refused to give up smoking even though my grandmother, Ruth, said how bad it was for him.
Frank developed emphysema - a serious lung disease. I recall for years seeing him in his chair coughing and having to use an oxygen tank to breath. Finally the disease killing him in 1965. I remember going to his funeral. It was the only time I recall seeing my father (John Sr.) cry.
Frank & Ruth raised their 2 sons (John & Carney) in their home in Long Beach, California, and continued to live there until the day they died.
