Frank Johnson Osborn b. 11 Nov 1896 in Trenton, Grundy, Missouri and died 16 Nov 1962 in Pasadena, Los Angeles, California. On 17 Mar 1917 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California he married Clara Ruth Carney. Ruth Carney Osborn was born 25 May 1894 in Santa Paula, Ventura, California and died 5 May 1967 in Long Beach, Los Angeles, California.
Frank & Ruth had 2 sons. The first son is William Carney Osborn who was born 25 Mar 1918 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California and died 7 Nov 2009 in Long Beach, Los Angeles, California at the age of 91. The second son is John Walter Osborn, Sr. who was born 21 Jan 1920 in Long Beach, Los Angeles, California and died 2 Oct 1996 in Santa Ana, Orange, California at the age of 76.
Frank's father was Walter Glen Osborn born 5 Apr 1875 in Ioka, Keokuk, Iowa and died 27 Jan 1970 in Pasadena, Los Angeles, California. His mother was Mary M. Johnson Osborn born in 1873 in Grovesprings, Wright, Missouri & died 14 Nov 1896 in Missouri. Walter and Mary were married 3 Dec 1895 in ,Keokuk, Iowa and Frank was their only child as she died soon after his birth in 1896.
Walter Glen Osborn married his second wife, Sarah Josephine Barber on 24 Nov 1904 in Long Beach, Los Angeles, California. Sarah Josephine was born 25 Nov 1877 in Mineral Wells, Palo Pinto, Texas and died 5 May 1968 in Pasadena, Los Angeles, California. They had 4 daughters and 2 sons: Sylva (1905-2000), Faith (1907-2007), Josephine (aka Jeanne-1908), Walter (Bud-1911), Esther (missionary-1914), Paul (1916 died an infant).
Frank's family was from the area of the Iowa / Missouri border. He was raised in a family with a step mother and half-brothers and half-sisters. I am told he was a sort of the "black sheep" of the family. He ran away from home as a teenager. As a young man he worked as a teamster (driving a team of horses).
About 1900 the Osborns (Walter & Sarah) moved to California where their son, Frank, and Ruth Carney met and married. It was a somewhat unusual match because Frank was a Baptist and Ruth was a Catholic. In those days it was very unusual to marry outside one's religion - eventually, however, Frank converted to become a Catholic.
My grandfather (Frank) was a barber and I (Christopher) still remember my father (John W. Sr.) taking us (John's children) all to grandfather's barber shop for haircuts. Once a month we boys (me and my 5 brothers) would line up on the barber chairs for haircuts. Then we would go over to grandfather and grandmother's house for Sunday dinner.
Grandfather (Frank) was a "hard boiled" character with his own ideas and a "salty" vocabulary and a gruff exterior with a heart of gold. He could be very stubborn though. He refused to give up smoking even though my grandmother, Ruth, said how bad it was for him.
Frank developed emphysema - a serious lung disease. I recall for years seeing him in his chair coughing and having to use an oxygen tank to breath. Finally the disease killing him in 1965. I remember going to his funeral. It was the only time I recall seeing my father (John Sr.) cry.
Frank & Ruth raised their 2 sons (John & Carney) in their home in Long Beach, California, and continued to live there until the day they died.
