Spanish-American War Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Finland, he immigrated to the United States in 1896. He served in the United States Navy during the War with Spain as a Coxswain on board the "USS Marblehead". He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery during the cutting of the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, on May 11, 1898. His citation reads "Facing the heavy fire of the enemy, Erickson set an example of extraordinary bravery and coolness throughout this action." His Medal was awarded to him on July 7, 1899.
