Born Herman James, but called James for most of his life, he was the third of the five children of Andrew and Sarah (Kearney) Bruney.

James married E. Gertrude Shellabarger on 18 Aug 1916. Just days after their first anniversary, James and Gertrude became the parents of the first of their ten children. Four of their sons died at birth or in infancy. One daughter, Margaret, died in her late teens. Two other daughters (G. Leora and Christina) and three sons (H. Elwood, Harold, and Dewey) lived to adulthood.

After Gertrude died in 1937, James remained a widower for nearly 30 years, raising their young children.

On Valentines Day 1966, he married Nellie (Naylor) McGrath, the widowed mother of his daughter-in-law Reva. Reva and Elwood's children went to school the next day, telling classmates that their grandmother had just married their grandfather! One of the teachers even called to check out the story and was told that yes, Grandpa Bruney had married Grandma McGrath the day before.

James is buried in Enon Cemetery, next to Gertrude and near their children. (Nellie is buried in California, next to Grover McGrath.)
