Hit-and-run accident kills Rustburg man

A Rustburg man was killed in a hit-and-run accident early Saturday on U.S. 221 in Bedford County, police say.

Virginia State Police have identified Ben Johnson Wright III, 25, of Rustburg, as the victim. He was walking northbound on U.S. 221 in Forest in the roadway when he was hit by a 1999 Honda Accord vehicle that left the scene, according to a news release from Sgt. Bob Carpentieri, a police spokesman.

The incident occurred around 5 a.m. Saturday a mile south of Bateman Bridge Road.

State police are interviewing a suspect that turned himself into the Lynchburg Police Department in reference to the accident, the news release said.

The accident is under investigation and Carpentieri said no additional details are available.

Ben Johnson Wright III, 25, went home to be with His Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on October 15, 2011.

He was born in Lynchburg, VA on October 20, 1985. He graduated from Liberty Christian Academy in 2004, and attended Liberty University.

He is survived by his dad, Ben Wright, Jr. and wife Robbi, his mother, Leslie Thompson and husband Frankie and brother, Dakota Wright; step-sisters: Ivy (Andy) Maddox, Lisa (Greg) Tibbs; his grandparents, Ben (Sr.) and Janice Wright, step-grandmother, Pat Dalton; his uncles and aunt: Tony (Cathy) Wright, Melanie (Ricky) Moore and Skip (Wanda) Riley. Also cousins: Megan (Mark) Hall and their children, Mark and Matt; Keith (Carmen) Wright; Hunter Moore and Jason Riley, step-niece: Nadia Tibbs; step-nephews: Luke Tibbs, Tyler Maddox and Dylan Maddox.

Ben was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Ervin and Nadine Riley.

A celebration of Ben's life will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, October 20, 2011 in Pate Chapel, Thomas Road Baptist Church with Pastor Mack Almond, Jr. of Living Water Ministries, Pastor Jonathan Falwell of Thomas Road Baptist Church and Wayne Lance, former LCA Football Coach officiating. Interment will follow in New Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery, Rustburg, VA.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 9:00 pm Wednesday, October 19, 2011 in the fellowship hall (Bruner) at Thomas Road Baptist Church and other times at Ben, Jr.'s home and Melanie's home.

Hit-and-run accident kills Rustburg man

A Rustburg man was killed in a hit-and-run accident early Saturday on U.S. 221 in Bedford County, police say.
