John H. Andrews
John Henry Andrews, son of John and Martha Ann Andrews, was born in Pennsylvania December 26, 1856, and departed this life May 17, 1937, at the age of 80 years, 4 months and 22 days.
He was the third of a family of eight children, five of whom had preceded him in death. Two sisters, Mrs. Mary Newman of Hamilton, IL, and Mrs. Martha Whitaker of Maywood, MO, survive. He was married to Rhoda Caroline Holden of West Point, IL, on October 10, 1883. To this union were born eight children, four of whom, Ada, Lloyd, Floyd and Clarence, died in early age, Lodeima also was taken March 1, 1912. The wife and mother passed away June 9, 1909.
The surviving children are Johnnie and Ethyal of Ewing, and Willie of Storm Lake, Iowa. He leaves besides the two sisters and three sons, five grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Mr. Andrews united with the Methodist church in early manhood, and in 1901 became with the Christian Church of which he remained a member until death. Mr. Andrews was a much beloved man, unassuming, yet exemplifying high ideals of living. He reared his sons to be honest, honorable, upright citizens in whom any community could have a pardonable pride, to these sons he has left a rich heritage. Mr. Andrews was a man in whom those who knew him best held in highest esteem. In his declining years he was most tenderly cared for in love and devotion.
The funeral was conducted in the Methodist Church in Durham, Wednesday, May 19th at 2 o'clock. Rev. Byron Ingold had charge of the service and was assisted by Rev. Glenn Renick. The large crowd which attended the last rites of this good man attested in a measure the esteem in which the family is held. Floral pieces were beautiful and were carried by the three granddaughters, Maxine Andrews, and Leta Marie and Ileen Andrews. The casket bearers were five nephews: Everett and Otis Whitaker, Bert Hughett, Gabe Ebert, Clarence Chipman and assisted by Otto Olson. The song service was in charge of Mrs. Oma Shackleford at the piano and a male quartet composed of Benjamin Shackleford, Elmer Gross, Arthur and Ora Willows. Burial was in Durham cemetery on the family lot. --- Durham correspondent
