The son of Benjamin & Elizabeth (Menges) Ziegler, in 1860 he was a laborer and painter living in York Borough, York County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 5" tall and had black hair and black eyes.


A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-one in York March 25, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg May 7 as a private with Co. H, 187th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865.


He married Matilda Alma Reese and fathered Laurena (b. 1870), Maud J. (b. @1872), and Reginald (b. 11/19/75). On April 22, 1886, John applied for a disability pension but did not receive it. He died suddenly from an apparent heart attack at his home at the reported age of 44-4-19.


On April 28, 1888, Matilda applied for a widow's pension and received it. Two years later, she was still living in York.
