Son of Edward Miller and Jessie Pattison (Imbrie) Miller.

Graduating from Princeton University in 1867, he entered Seminary at Princeton the same fall, graduating in 1870 and ordained by the Presbytery of Jersey City on April 16, 1872.

He went to Japan the same year, having affiliated himself with the Reformed Dutch Church, and did mission work in Yokohama from 1872 to 1874.

He married Mary Eddy Kidder on July 10, 1873 in Yokohama, Japan, and worked with her Ferris Seminary until 1879. He took the next two years on fulough in the United States.
Returning to Japan, he became a professor at Dr.Sherman's Union College (Meiji Gakuin) in Tokyo from 1881 to 1888.

From 1888 to 1902 he did mission work in Morioka. The following year he spent in the United States. Next, he did general missionary work in Tokyo until 1914, when he made his final return to the United States. He took residence in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania until his death.
