Calvin Parnell, 91, passed away on December 10, 2010 at home. Born September, 9, 1919 in Anadarko, Oklahoma, he was the son of Clarence and Ella Parnell. He was preceded in death by his mother Ella, his wife of sixty-two years (Doris), his brothers, Alvin and Dale, and his sister Wanda Faye. He is survived by his three children, Calvin, Jr. (Peggy), Kaye and Lynn (Barbara) and six grandchildren, Chris, Sarah, Brian, Kelley, David and Merilee and six great grandchildren, Michael and Daniel Parnell, Matthew and Megan Molloy and Nicole and Matthew Dean.
Calvin attended Hatch High School in Hatch, New Mexico. He met his wife Doris while living in Hatch. They were married on May 8th, 1940. Calvin is a veteran of WWII. He served in the U.S. Army tank corps and was stationed in Ft. Knox, Kentucky. He received the American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and Victory Medal. After being discharged from the Army in 1944, Calvin and Doris moved back to Hatch, N.M. where he farmed. In 1947, he and Doris moved to Anthony. Calvin worked for the Anthony Lumber Company, Southwest Fertilizer, and W.R. Grace and he farmed in his spare time. He retired from Grace in 2002 and continued farming.
Calvin's priorities were family, baseball, hunting, and fishing. He was an avid Red Sox fan. He served as the President of the Anthony Rangers He played softball and was the manager of the Anthony Lumber Co. softball team for many years. Calvin was a farmer for sixty-eight years, raising cotton, onions, chili and pecans. Calvin was a member of the Anthony Masonic Lodge and was a founding member of the Anthony Country Club. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, Dec. 15th from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at La Paz - Graham's Funeral Home, 555 W. Amador, Las Cruces, N.M. The funeral service will be held on Thursday Dec. 16th at 10:00 AM at the Anthony Church of Christ with burial to follow at the Anthony Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Calvin's name to the National Alzheimer's Organization
