CANTON, IL - Leonard "Louie" Whiteman, 78, of Canton died at 5:16 p.m. Thursday, May 8, 2008, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

He was born on July 19, 1929, in Canton to William and Nellie (Beasley) Whiteman. He married Lucille Nash in 1948. He later married JoAnn Schindler in 1950. In 1954, he married Wanda Waughtel. She preceded him in death.

Surviving are three daughters, Lila (Claude) Garzee of Canton, Sabrina (Steve) Beasley of Augusta, Ga., and Clara (John) Hopkins of Kewanee, Ill.; and his sons, Richard (Connie) of Marietta, William (Vicki) of Wee-Ma-Tuk, Gerry of Pensacola, Fla., Charles (Debbie) of Pensacola, Fla., Jeff (Brenda) of Canton and Calvin (Bernadine Krull) of Canton. He is also survived by 24 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Barbara Johnson of Lewistown. Also surviving is Catherine Bowman of Canton, with whom he shared the remainder of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Jack Medill; his wife, Wanda; one sister, Betty Davis; two brothers, Billy and Joe; one grandson; and one great-grandson.

Louie served in the U.S. Marine Corp.

He was employed and retired from Caterpillar Tractor Company.

He was a member of the UAW Local 974, Moose Lodge, Eagles Lodge and the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Canton.

He enjoyed landscaping and yard work.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service and burial of cremains will take place at a later date. Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
