Mary Adeline Martin was the daughter of William Columbus Martin and Isabelle Peters. Isabelle was the daughter of John Daniel Peters and Adeline Copeland, from whom Mary Adeline received her middle name.
Mary Adeline Martin married Edwin Lafayette Fletcher, 16 October 1881 at the home of her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Wm Columbus Martin. E.L. Fletcher was the son of John Wesley Fletcher and Susan E. Dasher. They are shown living in New River Township, Berrien Co., GA in the 1910 US census.
E.L. Fletcher was orphaned as a one year old child when his father, John Wesley Fletcher, was killed at Boonsboro, MD 14 Sept 1862 during the Maryland Campaign, fighting under "Stonewall" Jackson.
Mary Martin's father, Wm Columbus Martin, was severely wounded on 17 Sept 1862, at the Battle of Antietam, just three days after John Fletcher received his mortal wound. Billy Martin survived his wounds, literally crawling off the surgeon's table where both of his legs were to be amputated, and later surviving typhoid fever at the Confederate Hospital in Richmond, Va.
Wm C. Martin became Clerk of Cat Creek Primitive Baptist Church where the Fletchers attended. His sister married in to the Dasher family.

Both were Confederate Veterans and deacons at Cat Creek Baptist Church. By 1928, Mrs. Martin was living with another daughter, Mrs. Letha Fountain, on Montgomery Street in Savannah, Ga. Mrs. Martin applied for a Confederate Veteran's pension in 1928. Her grandson, William Carroll Martin, son of Wm Elzie Martin, stated in 1996 that he recalled when "they were trying to get the pension for Grandma. She was very old and bedridden."
The Fletcher family were pioneers in Lowndes and Berrien Co., GA. Another branch of the Fletcher family went down to Florida where they became large plantation owners and leading politicians of their era.
The father, John Wesley Fletcher, was born 3 April 1826 in Telfair Co., GA, the son of Zachariah Fletcher and Mary Melvina Lofton and grandson of the Revolutionary War patriot, John Fletcher, R.S., born ca 1765 in Marion District, South Carolina. Mary Adeline Martin's family was also from Marion District, South Carolina where her ancestor, Matthew Martin, R.S. served in the Revolutionary War under Gen. Francis Marion, the elusive "Swamp Fox" upon whose character the movie "The Patriot" is loosely based. Matthew Martin's father, Moses Martin, was a soldier in the Cherokee Expedition of 1759-60 under Colonel George Gabriel Powell.
