OBITUARY - MARTHA LOUISA POPE
Mrs. Martha Louisa Pope, wife of R. M. Pope, was born January 31, 1856 and passed away February 11, 1920, at the age of 64 years and 11 days. Her husband had preceded her several years. Nine children were in the family, seven of whom are living to mourn the death of a good mother. Funeral services were conducted at the home by Rev. J. H. Browning. The body was laid to rest in the Eugene Cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Dell L. Spalding in Heney, Mo., Mrs. and Mrs. Harry Lee Shirley in Galena, Kansas, Luther Pope, Carl William Pope, Mr. and Mrs. John Jones, Charley Pope and Ted F. Pope in Etterville, Mo.

The three children were educated at the Missouri School for the Deaf in Callaway, Missouri. Along with reading and writing, they learned to communicate using sign language. Most of their family learned this skill as well.
