Family moved from Terrell, Texas to Graham, Texas when he was about 10 and then on to Lubbock in 1925. He graduated from Texas in 1936 (taking off time to work because of the depression). He became a well known architect in west Texas and was especially known for the design of churches and schools.

Jamie married Armista Lucille Heggen in 1936. They had six children, but the first two (twins) died as infants.
