Daniel and his brother Thomas both enlisted in the Confederate Army in March of 1862. He died in June of 1862, a month after Thomas. His father and uncle (Seth Abernathy) both came to Atlanta to retrieve his body and that of Thomas. His brother Jonas joined in 1864 and lived through the war.
