Sam bought his first registered Holstein female in 1899, building on one cow he established his entire herd, which ranks as an unusual accomplishment. Among the sires used were bulls purchased from W.F. Schilling of Northfield, Mn. in 1915 H.C. VonWald of Nerstrand, MN in 1922. In the 1920 era he and a neighbor, Wright Parkin had as their herd sire Pabst Model Creator, a son of Creator from a cow with a 985 pound record. After Sam's death in 1943 the herd was continued by Ernest and his son, Sam Ellson until auctioned off in 1958, after a span of fifty-nine years.
