OBITUARY: Katie Gresbeck Rites Held Here Wednesday

The Walker community was saddened Sunday, June 8, by word that "Kate" Gresbeck, 72, one of the town's most sparkling personalities, had died at Lutheran Hospital, at Bemidji.

Death was attributed to uremic poisoning. Kate had been taken there on Tuesday, June 3.

Funeral services were held at St. Agnes Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, with Rev. Father Carl A. Priley officiating. Rosary was held at the Thomas Funeral Home Tuesday evening.

Kate is survived by two brothers, Frank, of Bowlus, Minn., and Louis, of St. Paul. A number of nephews and nieces also survive, in addition to a large host of friends.

Serving as pallbearers were Martin Reid, Willis Dahlem, Roy Krueger, Thomas Reed, William Johnson, and Rollie Cleghorn. Horonary pallbearers were Peter Palusky, Otto Hillberg, Ingval Hillberg, Neal Dewey, Al Rostin, Louis Berge, Charles Berry, and Les Reed.

Internment was made at Evergreen Cemetery.

"Katie" as she was best known to countless Walker area residents and summer visitors over the years, was born at North Prairie, Minn., on March 31, 1886, to Andrew and Katherine Gresbeck. She lived there until 1904, when she came to Walker to live with and assist her sister, Julia, late wife of J.A. (Albert) Carlson, in maintaining the Carlson home.

Remaining here ever since, Katie became best known during the years Albert Carlson operated the College Inn Tavern, in the building now housing Norman and Donna Carlson's furniture and gift store. Her easy, wholesome laugh and keen sense of humor left their marks with many summer tourists, and "How's Katie?" was often the first question they asked when meeting Walkerites anywhere.

Her personality also won her a "Miss Popularity" contest held here in the early 20's. She was also well known for her coffee parties, held whenever old friends like Mattie Krueger and Anna (Arneson) Knudsen and others stopped by, and gave generously of herself to helping many.

Attending her funeral from out of town, were: Mr. And Mrs. Frank Gresbeck of Bowlus; Louis Gresbeck, St. Paul; Mr. And Mrs. George Gresbeck, St. Paul; John Gresbeck, Chicago: John Burke, Jamestown, N.D; Mr. And Mrs. John Dobos, August Dobos, and Mr. And Mrs. Joe Posch, all of Rice; Mr. And Mrs. Tom Pollack, St. Cloud; Mrs. Julia Czech, Holdingford; Mr. And Mrs. William Mealey, Howard Lake; Mrs. Anne Knudsen, Brainerd; and Mr. And Mrs. Harry Grindall of Bemidji.
