Daughter of Jake and Jennie (Wubbena) Mehmen

Effie Schipper, age 90, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the daughter of Jake and Jennie (Wubbena) Mehmen on July 6, 1921, rural Butler County, Clarksville, Iowa. As a teen, Effie moved to live and work for George and Hilda (Voss) Johnson as a hired young lady, but very quickly became a part of their family she loved as her own. She received her education from a rural country school near her home and then graduated from the Aplington High School in 1943.

On December 3, 1947, Effie was united in marriage with Henry A. Schipper at the First Reformed Church Parsonage in Aplington, Iowa. The couple lived and farmed three different farms, all north of Aplington. Effie was a loving wife, mother and hard working farm wife. She worked alongside Henry on the farm and enjoyed raising a large garden every year. The couple moved to town in 1984.

Effie was a long time member of Bethel Reformed Church, rural Aplington. Through the years she enjoyed traveling with Henry to farm progress shows and taking many other family vacations. She enjoyed fishing and camping and would often go with her sisters. Recently she enjoyed playing bingo at Maple Manor and also taking various bus trips they offered. Her pride and joy were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren that were very important to her.

Effie died Sunday, October 09, 2011, at the Maple Manor Village in Aplington, of natural causes.

She was preceded in death by husband, Henry A. Schipper on March 4, 2005; her parents; three sisters, Carol Rupe, Anna Mehmen and Jeanette Wiese; and two brothers, John Mehmen and Jake Mehmen.

Effie is survived by two sons, Merle (his special friend, Jeri Huffman of Cedar Falls) Schipper of Aplington and Jim (Belva) Schipper of Aplington; one daughter, Kathy (Rick) Penning of Wellsburg, Iowa; five grandchildren, Ryan (LeAnn) Schipper, Todd (Jessica) Schipper, Carrie (John) Koop, Dean (Sarah) Penning, Curtis (Cam) Penning; eight great-grandchildren, Ryleigh and Jaxon Schipper, Eli and Isaac Schipper, and Brayden, Keaton, Jaden and Owen Penning; two sisters, Gertie Hilsenbeck of Jefferson, Iowa, and Carrie Wickwire of Rockwell, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at the Bethel Reformed Church in rural Aplington, with burial in the Pleasant View Cemetery rural Aplington.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, at the Redman-Schwartz Chapel in Aplington, (319)347-6275, and one hour before services at the church.
