Samuel Thompson Shankland, was born on 1 September 1830, in Nichols County, Kentucky. He was the son of Andrew Gib Shankland and Judith Ann Stoops Shankland.

Samuel Thompson Shankland, was the third born child of Andrew and Judith Shankland. Siblings included: Nancy B.; Emerine; Sarah Jane; William H.; James M.; Elizabeth; Benjamin H.; and David. The children had been born in Kentucky.

Samuel and Martha Ann Mattingly, daughter of Henry Mattingly and his wife, Mary Ann Wimsatt, were married in Fulton, Illinois, on 05 May 1858. Samuel and Martha Ann were had celebrated their 43rd Wedding Anniversary, shortly before Martha's death.

Samuel and Martha Shankland, became parents of their only daughter, Lucinda V. Shankland, born in July of 1859, in Illinois.

By 1880, Samuel, now 49 years old, and Martha, along with their daughter Lucinda, and Martha's younger sister, Mary Mattingly were living in Scott Township, Bourbon County, Kansas. Samuel's occupation was reportedly that of a farmer.

Samuel purchased the family home on Eddy Street, in Fort Scott, from Mr. J. B. Chapman, the first Publisher of the Fort Scott Tribune, in 1889. The home had been built by Mr. Chapman in 1886, and consisted of four bedrooms, two baths, a formal living room, sitting room, formal dining room, and kitchen.

Lucinda and her husband Stephen Lott Mills also lived in this home, with their small four children! The house was filled with laughter, and the patter of little feet for the next few years!

By 1900, Samuel's work took him to Osawatomie, Miami County, Kansas, where he had become Superintendent of the Missour/Pacific Rail Road.

Sadly, Martha had become ill about this same time and was unable to accompany Samuel. Instead, she stayed in Ft. Scott with her daughter, Lucinda, and her family, so that Lucinda could care for her. Meanwhile, Samuel boarded with Frank and Bertha Armson, and family,in Osawatomie. Frank was also employed by the railroad.

Martha died in May of 1901, and was interred at the Evergreen Cemetery, located in Ft. Scott, Bourbon County, Kansas. Samuel returned to Ft. Scott, around 1902, and lived in the small cottage behind the house on Eddy Street. It was here that he would spend his twilight years, until his death in 1908.

Samuel Thompson Shankland was interred next to his beloved wife, Martha, at Evergreen Cemetery, in Ft. Scott. He was survived by his widowed daughter Lucinda Mills, and his loving grandchildren: Samuel L. Mills, (1889-1945); Lucinda "Virginia" Mills, (1891-1982); Elizabeth G. Mills, 1893-1942); and Grace Vivian Mills Polak, (1897-1988).

Between 1911-1912, Lucinda would sell the family home on Eddy Street, and relocate her family to San Jose Township, Santa Clara County, California. Lucinda and her family would remain in the Santa Clara Valley the rest of their lives. Lucinda and her four children: Samuel L. Mills; Lucinda "Virginia" Mills, Elizabeth Mills, and Grace Vivian Mills Polak, are buried at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery, located in Santa Clara, Santa Clara County, California, USA
