Son of Thomas Newton and Joan Smith Newton of Fairfield,CT.

He married first, about 1680, Mary Hubbell. She was born 1661, a daughter of Richard Hubbell and Elizabeth Meigs Hubbell of Stratford,CT. Mary died sometime after 1704.

He married, second, on Jan 1,1734/5 at Colchester,CT as her third husband, Mary White Wells Barnard, the widow of Noah Wells and Francis Barnard. She later married John White, and died after 1750.

Children(by first marriage): Dorothy Newton Crawford, Alice Newton Ransom, James Newton Jr, Ann Newton Kellogg, Israel Newton, Mary Newton Wells, and Abigail Newton Loomis(wife of Azariah Loomis).
