On October 7, 2011, our beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Roland W. Dance, slipped away from this mortal existence, just a few weeks before his ninety-eighth birthday.

Roland was a most wonderful and delightful person and was loved by all. Neither he nor his family thought of him as "elderly" and are mightily saddened at his passing.

Although he was diagnosed with lymphoma four years ago, he was successfully treated by Dr. Richard Frame and continued to live a full life, including continuing his employment with Standard Equipment Supply where he had been happily employed for over fifty-five years (he was proud that he never officially retired).

Early in his career, Roland was involved in the Junior Chamber of Commerce and was often in charge of the Christmas activities for Salt Lake City, including the downtown Christmas parade.

He was also very involved in the Sentinel Club. He loved the mountains and had a great passion for skiing but reluctantly gave it up at age ninety-four.

Roland was a regular at the Forest Dale Golf Course, having golfed with friends and family each Saturday morning for many years. His last day of golf was Saturday, October 1.

Roland and Eileen were proficient square dancers and for over twenty years, traveled the country to dance with friends and favorite callers. In 1991, they co-chaired the National Square Dance Convention held in Salt Lake City.

Roland and Eileen loved the arts and were long time attendees of and contributors to the Utah Opera, Utah Symphony, Ballet West and Pioneer Memorial Theatre. Roland was enthusiastic about life, loved people, and was especially generous with his family.

Roland was born to Lula W. and Willard A. Dance in Blackfoot, Idaho on October 25, 1913 and was the oldest of three sons.

He was a hard worker from the beginning, picking beets on his grandparents' farm in Honeyville at the age of twelve, delivering telegrams for Western Union at the age of fifteen and many other occupations. He graduated from Utah State University with a Bachelor's Degree in accounting in 1936.

He moved to Salt Lake City to work for Continental Oil and lived in the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity house for three years. While living there, he met the love of his life, Eileen Freeman. They eloped on April 29, 1939 and their marriage lasted sixty-one years until Eileen's passing on June 28, 2000.

Survived by children, Betty Ann Dance, Carol D. Sjoberg (David), Kathleen ("Kathy") D. Jones (Tom) and Robert F. Dance (Shawnie); fifteen grandchildren and thirty great-grandchildren; brother Harold W. Dance (Ruth), three nieces and two nephews, numerous friends and clients, and an especially close friend, Lorenzo Hoops. Preceded in death by his parents, his wife Eileen, brother Donald, and a beloved nephew, Brad Dance.

Roland was a faithful member of the LDS Church, having served in many capacities in the Mountain View First Ward, where he resided for sixty-two years.

For the past three years, he resided at the Highland Cove Retirement Community and attended LDS meetings there where he was honored to pass the sacrament and serve as a Home Teacher.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 14, 2011 at 12 o'clock noon in the Winder Stake Center located at 4366 South 1500 East. Viewings will be held on Thursday evening, October 13, 2011, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Larkin Mortuary located at 260 East South Temple Street, Salt Lake City, Utah, and from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Winder Stake Center prior to the funeral services.
