Suzann K. Stephens, 63, of St. Louis, Mo., formerly of Peoria, passed away Friday, Sept. 30, 2011, in Peoria.

She was born July 15, 1948, in Peoria to Donald O. and Rosabell McDonald Stephens.

She is survived by her mother of Peoria; one sister, Mary (Charles) Taylor of Peoria; two brothers, Don (Amy) Stephens and Doug Stephens (Tammy Sears), both of Peoria; and one sister-in-law, Gretchan Stephens of Peoria.

She was preceded in death by her father; one brother, Jerry Stephens; and a beloved niece, Natalie Taylor.

Sue was a 1966 graduate of Academy of Our Lady and a graduate of Fontbonne University in St. Louis. She received a Masters degree in speech pathology from St. Louis University and instructed and assessed hearing-impaired children in the Missouri public school system for 40 years.

Sue's passion as a certified doula trainer was recognized in 1999 by Barnes Jewish Hospital for her exemplary work in developing the hospital-based doula program.

Sue held closest to her heart the time she spent training as a midwife, under the guidance of her preceptor, mentor and dear friend, Dr. Fred Duhart.

Sue lived her life as she wanted, loving, learning and sharing with all who were open to her gifts.

Sue had an infectious joyous attitude which affected everyone she encountered. She had a way of making everyone she met a happier person.

She touched the lives of her students in such a way that many stayed in touch with her well into adulthood and many introduced her to their children.

Her lifelong love of learning allowed her to try many differing fields and to become proficient in each, including speech pathology, massage therapy, acupuncture and her favorites, doula work and midwifery.

Sue had a soft spot for children of all ages and abilities, which enhanced her great sense of play and fun. She relished new experiences, and found friends to share in each of her passions, bringing her a diverse group from which to glean their loves and interests.

Sue loved and had great appreciation for nature and spent many summers camping in Colorado. The Missouri Botanical Gardens was her favorite refuge from her very busy life. She traveled extensively, visiting all 50 states. Sue worked hard and played hard.

She filled her life with love and long lasting relationships. Sue took each of her roles as daughter, sister, lover, friend, teacher, student and mentor with great passion and a lust for life.

Burial will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens.
