Daughter of Dr. Samuel Hodges, a prominent physician and wealthy planter. Granddaughter of Robert Hodges who in 1795 bought large tracts of land which included the site of the present town of Mullins, which Sara inherited at the death of her father.

Sara married William Sidney Mullins on April 28, 1847 in Cumberland County, NC.
