The parents of Gladys Cochran were William Wesley Cochran and Cora Lee (Brown) Cochran.

The 1900 US Census of Muscadine, Cleburne Co., AL enumerated the household of 48 Y/O Joseph McDonald Brown, a railroad agent born in AL, and his 45 Y/O wife, Mary "Mollie" Byrd (McCleskey) Brown, born in GA. They were married on 27 Feb 1881 at Milton Co., GA. Also living in the household among several siblings was their 12 Y/O daughter, Cora Lee Brown, born in AL.

The 1900 US Census of Crumley, DeKalb Co., AL enumerated the household of 40 Y/O John J. Cochran, a farmer born in GA, and his 34 Y/O wife, Frances Cochran, born in GA. Also living in the household among several sibling was their 14 Y/O son, William Wesley Cochran.

The April 1910 US Census of Muscadine, Cleburne Co., AL enumerated the household of 24 Y/O William Wesley Cochran, born in Alabama and employed as a railroad operator, and his 22 Y/O wife, Cora Cochran [Cora Lee (Brown) Cochran], born in AL. Also living in the household was their 3 month old daughter, Gladys Cochran.

The 12 Sep 1918 WWI registration Card of William Wesley Cochran indicated he was living in Woodstock, Bibb Co., AL with his wife, Mrs. Cora Lee Cochran, and family and but was employed as a railroad operator in Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL. (FYI: The Bibb County portion of Woodstock is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area)

The 1920 US Census of Fort Payne, DeKalb Co., AL enumerated the household of 34 Y/O William Wesley Cochran, employed as a railroad telegrapher and his 31 Y/O wife, Cora Lee (Brown) Cochran. Also living in the household were their children: 9 Y/O Gladys Cochran; 8 Y/O Frances Cochran; 6 Y/O Florence Cochran and 2 Y/O William Cochran.

Gladys' sister, Frances Cochran Baxter, also lived in Fort Payne, AL.

The 1930 US Census of Fort Payne, DeKalb Co. AL enumerated the household of 44 Y/O William Wesley Cochran, employed as a railroad telegrapher and his 42 Y/O wife, Cora Lee (Brown) Cochran. Also living in the household were their children: 20 Y/O "E." Gladys Cochran, born in Alabama, whose occupation was public school teacher and who would later marry Jesse L. Appleton. NOTE: The 1930 US Census is the only reference that records Gladys' first initial as "E"; 18 Y/O M. Frances Cochran, occupation was a stenographer in a local hosiery mill; 16 Y/O Florence Cochran: 12 Y/O William W. Cochran and 3 Y/O Robert J. Cochran. Surprisingly, living next door was the household of 52 Y/O William Green Tate and his 48 Y/O wife, Josie J. [Josephine (Mince) Tate]. Living in the household was their 17 Y/O daughter, Beulah M. Tate, who would later marry John Bulow Appleton., brother of Jesse L. Appleton.

Sometime between 1930 and 1940 Gladys Cochran married Jesse L. Appleton.

The 1940 US Census of Fort Payne, DeKalb Co., AL enumerated the household of 33 Y/O Jesse L. Appleton, employed as a bank teller at the First National Bank, and his 30 Y/O wife, Gladys, employed as an elementary school teacher. Jesse indicated he had one year of college. Gladys was a graduate of Jacksonville State Teachers College and was a teacher for 43 years in the Fort Payne educational system.

Obit: "Mrs. Gladys C. Appleton of Fort Payne, AL passed away Friday, December 6, 2002 at BMC Hospital in Fort Payne, AL. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jess L. Appleton. She was born January 9, 1910 in Cleburne County, AL, the daughter of the late William W. and Cora Brown Cochran.

Mrs. Appleton taught elementary school in the Fort Payne School System for 43 years. She was a graduate of Jacksonville State Teachers College. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church since 1926.

Graveside service will be Saturday, December 7, 2002 at Glenwood Cemetery with Rev. Chris Denson officiating.
