Born in about 1587, he was the only son of William, 1st Baron Thornhaugh and his wife, Elizabeth Long.
He built the square of Covent Garden, with the piazza and church of St. Paul's, employing Inigo Jones as architect. He is also known for his attempt to drain The Fens of Cambridgeshire, a project not completed until after his death.
Died of smallpox in the parish of St. Martin-in-the-Fields (since 1725, St. George, Hanover Square), London. He rests in the family vault at St. Michael's Church next to his wife, Catherine Brydges.
