Joseph E. Gabriels Sr.
1924 - 2011

Joseph E. Gabriels, Sr, 87 years, of Ida, formerly of Detroit, died peacefully on October 7, 2011, at the Lutheran Home of Monroe. Friends may call at the Capaul Funeral Home, Ida, Wednesday from 2-9 PM. He will lie in state at St. Joseph's church, Ida, Thursday, from 10 AM until the Mass of the Resurrection at 11 AM. Fr. Joseph Loberti will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Monroe.

He follows his beloved wife Mary Ann (Gruber) whom he married June 7, 1947. Loving father of Joseph, Arlington, MA, and Thomas, Lambertville, MI. He will be dearly missed by Betty Shindler, his companion for the past 18 years. He is dearly remembered by his daughter-in-law Mary Wisnewski and his granddaughters, Emily, and Serena, and by Sharon Smigiel, Thomas's fiancee. He is held in loving memory by Betty's children, Terry Denise, Barry, Deb, Tammy and Mark Burson, and by the grandchildren, Joshua, Jacob, Melissa, Breonna, Michael, Krista, and family.

Born in Detroit on June 12, 1924, to Christopher Gabriels and Madeleine (Muschoot) of Belgium. He graduated from St. Phillip Neri High School, and then Wayne State University with certificates in electrical engineering and management. He was a master machinist at General Motors and then in Research and Development at La-Z-Boy for 19 years. He retired in 1995, and was a life member of Lynn C. Weeman Post 514, American Legion, and Monroe Post 1138, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of the Belgian Dance Club in Erie. Mr. Gabriels, a veteran of World War ll, served in the United States Navy. Joseph was well known for his wry sense of humor.
