U.S. Congressman. He graduated from University of North Carolina, in 1947, received a law degree in 1948, was admitted to the bar and commenced the practice of law in Sylva, North Carolina. He served as attorney for the towns of Sylva, Dillsboro, Webster and Jackson County; in 1952, organized the Jackson County Savings & Loan Association, in 1953, was a member of the North Carolina State Senate, in the 1955 and a member of North Carolina Board of Water Commissioners, (1955-58). In 1959, he was elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-sixth Congress and served until his death at the age of 41.
